Mic Placement for Live Settings

Postby smile-4-me » Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:52 am

Not sure if this is the best place to post the question but I'm checking to see what mics people use and what placements they use for a live setting on their tophats.
I have a S16 2x12 open back cab with 1 blue and 1 heritage. Any suggestions.
I've tried 2 mics blended (one on each speaker about an inch away from the grill and a couple inches off center of the speaker cones)
I've also tried 2 mics (one on the blue speaker the other an inch into the back of the cab and phase reversed on the back mic)

I'm no pro though so any help would be appreciated. Again this is for a live setting, not for a recording session.
Thanks.

i use a sennheiser e609 on all my gigs for all my amps. no mic stand needed...to me, simpler is better (i tie the cable around the amp handle....it takes a little fussing to get it positioned right). i generally aim to hang the mic midway between the edge of the speaker and the center of the dome. eq the mixer channel strip to taste (mixer has high, low and 2x sweepable mids, so getting the guitar to sound right throught he mains isn't much of a problem). on cabs with more than one speaker, i hang the mic over the speaker i spent the most $$ on, to justify my investment :)

in my band, we do a lot of 3 and 4 part vocal stuff (beatles, beach boys, byrds, eagles, tubes, petty), so low instrument stage volume is essential for hearing the vocals in the monitors. i usually end up hearing my guitar more through the floor monitors than through the amp itself.

TUBES - too cool!

For mics - acorkos is right on the money - I've both played with an e609 on an amp as well as go see a band fairly regularly the uses one, it does seem to be the best all around.

I've played with a speaker extension yet never mic'd both speakers. I usually use a 57 and mount it in the back of my amp for stage space reasons - yet another consideration for using the e609. You can buy any number of drum clips that will do a good job of holding the mic in place.
If room permits it'll be just off the cone lower left. . . . funny though I usually mic my Jensen and not my V30 - just me.
