That's interesting that Brian mentioned that - maybe the early 35watt amps are more like an 18watt circuit Marshall x2 than an AC30-derived amp (like the King Royale) .

Actually, no. I asked him in the same conversation if the early ones were less "Vox" and more "Marshall," and his words were, "No, I wouldn't say that at all." I remember him being fairly emphatic about it.

Having played only one TopHat (a CR), I can only speculate. But maybe the early T-35's were intended to mimic the normal and brilliant channels of an AC-30 and Brian refined the design until he got what he wanted (Vox/Marshall) from the platform and then christened it King Royale. Well...its a thought anyway

I guess my T-35TB is closer to the configuration of the final King Royale than the T-35.

Great chassis photos - stand-up trannies, ponderosa chassis (Brian's description of the multi-functional chassis), etc.

Here's my scripty KR chassis:

My amp was finished 1/4/99. It's interesting to see the progression of Brian's (and Phil's) work. By the way, I have had a couple lengthy discussions with Brian about the "Marshallness" of the scripty era Kings. He has said on a couple occasions that the old stand up transformers were much closer in build spec to old JTM45 transformers than they were to Vox transformers; smaller wire, more winds, etc. All I know is that my King sounds much much much closer to Clapton's Beano tone than it does to anything Voxey I have ever heard. Just my $0.02.

By the way - welcome aboard Fizzy.

Fizzy - you may find a build date in black marker on the inside of your chassis.

Also; back in the early days, Brian's amps were definitely "works in process/progress". He went through many changes and tweaks along the way, as he searched for tone, best wiring schemes, etc.

The guts of some of his later amps are works of art. Whether the amps were/are wired by Brian or Thuey back in Orange Cuonty, the later chassis work has been bullet proof and stellar.

I am interested in seeing yours, especially since it was such an early model.

Yo, Bigsby

I wasn't familiar with the Stone Roses (other than having heard of them), but the song is great and your cover is even better, IMHO, than the original! Great work.

It's pretty dark in the video, are you playing a Casino or a Riviera? In any event, the TopHat sounds great.

Best,

I will try to open it up to see what is in there next. Did not have time to disect this weekend. I will be in the market for another Top Hat here soon.

This amp was originally black but I wanted it red so this is it...Bill Webb did all the work for me here in Austin. He does Fulton-Webb amps here which are more on the Marshall side of the block. He is sort of the mad scientist type gotta love that. His working on bringing an ADA flanger back to life for me right now.

that hammond power transformer (the darker one with the heavy dust on it) has a date code stamped on the label....that might help determine the build date

here's some pics of 1994 T-35 #001

Who did the 1/2 power mod on your amp, I have been toying around with the idea of doing that. Are you happy with the outcome?

factory mod....it works as you would want it to. but you need an output transformer with 2 secondary taps...mine has an 8 and a 16ohm
